Do You Need Garden Planning Permission For A Garden Shed?
If you are planning to build a garden shed, you need permission from the local planning commission. You always need to check with the local authorities about garden planning permission. That being said, in most communities, permission is already granted in the building codes for building a normal sized garden shed.
Local building codes may limit the size of building that can be built without a permit. Normally the size that does not require a permit ls less than 8 by 10 feet or 10 by 10 feet. In addition to square footage, there may be restrictions on the height and certain setbacks that need to be met.
When you live in certain subdivisions other restrictions may have been imposed by the covenants, conditions and restrictions of that subdivision. These covenants may limit one’s ability to build a garden shed. There should have been a copy of the covenants in your home purchase packet.
When planning your garden shed you will need plans. Experienced homeowners may be able to draw their own building plans; however, plans for a garden shed are often inexpensive. The plans not only give the placement of the walls but instruct the builder on the length of each board. Additionally, there are kits available for garden sheds that have all lumber pre-cut to the correct length.
If you are required to get a building permit, you will need to have some kind of plan showing what you want to do. Planners want to know what your plans are before giving their stamp of approval to the project.
It is always best to check with local authorities before any building project. They may be able to answer your question about needing a permit through a phone call. If you build without a permit when one is needed, you may be required to tear down the project.
