Personally I think that every family should invest in kitchen dining sets, not necessarily because they need them for eating – although clearly that’s their main purpose. But as a way of helping to bring the family together. With televisions, mobiles and computers all taking our attention up for so much of the time, having a meal together as a family is often the only way in which casual news and chat takes place.

But the real problem is that we tend to either use the dining table for more formal meals, or slurp our breakfast cereal off a tray. There’s a definite sense with kitchen tables that the meal is more casual. You’re all sitting round in a much closer arrangement than at a dining table. Most kitchen tables are round as well – no one’s at the head of the table – you’re all equals.

We have had a dining table for some time in our house, but like most families this tends to be used for formal meals. I decided that a breakfast table or kitchen table would be ideal. I like the idea of a smaller, less formal table – and I like round tables too because they offer a family the chance to sit as equals.

But like many families I had a problem – space. Our kitchen isn’t small particularly, but once you stick a table in there it does become a little crowded. However, I considered two possible solutions – either a breakfast bar, which will fit almost any kitchen, or looking for kitchen dining sets suitable for our conservatory.

Most of us would, given the choice, rather eat breakfast in the sunshine than sitting in a kitchen staring at the vegetable rack. Once the idea occurred to me to buy a kitchen table and place it in the conservatory my mind was made up. Imagine sitting in the conservatory having breakfast with your family, the sun reflecting off the milk jug.

So, having decided upon a conservatory table I set to looking at the various kitchen dining sets available, and was astonished at the choices on offer. There are some quite small sets for just two people that would easily fit into most kitchens, but I decided to focus on the large, traditional wood tables with four chairs – ideal for the whole family.

Although it’s easy to think that kitchen dining sets are all simply tables and chairs, there are various combinations on offer, including sideboards or dressers. Although many smaller, or modern style kitchens would not suit such furniture, older, larger kitchens such as those in farmhouses will find such items add not only convenience, but a very great deal of style too. For the smaller, more modern kitchen, I would definitely recommend one of the small, two seater table and chair sets – often made from steel and glass, offering style and sophistication without taking over your entire kitchen area.
